2020 significantly impacted events all over the world but as we enter 2021, there seems to be more hope for some normality, particularly when it comes to getting together.
Though we’re no fortune tellers, we’ve been in this business a while and so we’re taking a look ahead and the trends we expect to see in the events industry over the coming year.
As a reflection on societal norms, moving away from physical contact will be something that will carry on into 2021.
This means we’ll be looking at more contactless options and touchless interaction for events, using digital technology for transactions like paying and communicating wherever possible.
2020 taught us that we need to stay up to date, and that’s something your customers appreciate too. That’s why communication will play a big role in events in 2021. People are looking for transparency, so being open and honest in your communication will be imperative.
It will also work the other way. You may need to ask for more information from your customers, including questions about health. This could lead to health screenings - either in the form of questionnaires before the event or having temperature checks and even COVID-19 tests pre-entry to an event.
Social distancing won’t go away overnight, which means your event will still have to adhere to the rules. That means considering your room layout more carefully and learning to manage entrance queues to help maintain social distance.
To aid with communication, plexiglass barriers may help with attendees and staff.
Outdoor events will be easier to accommodate larger groups of people and can help you set a distance between attendees.
Consider terraces, gardens and outdoor theatres - and to really be ahead of the trend, festival-type events look set to be huge in 2021.
As is already happening in events, increased cleaning and sanitation has been a necessity, and this won’t change in 2021.
Rigorous cleaning needs to be maintained before, during and after your event and practices such as face masks and hand sanitizers will be here to stay for a little while longer yet.
This year has made us all more aware of our impact on the planet and this awareness looks set to continue in 2021.
Reducing waste and plastic consumption, as well as considering in general how to minimise your environmental impact will be a big talking point this year.
